This truck is a bit of a Cinderella story for us: we bought it several years ago from a young couple that just were not up to spending what it needed. It came with a blown head gasket, some worn paint, and the usual batch of deferred maintenance. When we lately got around to reviving and reconditioning it, we found we had "the belle of the ball" once were done: a great looking, super nice running truck that stands out in even the best company! Of course, it took a bit of doing to make the transformation. Mechanically we;
-overhauled the engine's top end, installing refurbed heads with new premium composite head gaskets from Elring using super-strong ARP head bolts with a fastening toque of 75lbs/ft!
-did a major engine service including new coils, wires, and plugs and the correct engine oil (15-40 high zinc) and OEM filter.
-very importantly, we dramatically upgraded the cooling system with the amazing Inline Thermostat Conversion which, along with new hoses, water pump, and correct coolant, drops the standard operating temperatures on these engine by some 30-35 degrees, from the 220's to the 180's! This is the indisputable key to engine longevity and trouble-free service on an LR 4.6.
-we also did the important ABS shuttle valve bypass which eliminates the troublesome "3 Amigos" traction control problem.
-of course, all fluids and filters were checked or changed.
-new high wear coated brake discs and performance pads were installed.
-a modest 2" lift came from the popular Terrafirma spring/shock kit.
-and it rides on the very competent Nokia Roadian AT Pro8 tires in a 31.6" size, 2.6"s over stock, mounted to black Hurricane wheels.
The body and chassis needed help also so we:
-replaced a bashed front bumper with a terrific aftermarket piece that features tons of upgrade off-road lighting and is winch-ready.
-added Terrafirma headlight and taillight guards.
-installed a strong Atlantic British steel rear bumper.
-upgraded the stock headlights to powerful LEDs and added some orange grille-mounted daytime running lights.
-refinished the paint-faded roof with an ultra-durable polyurethane textured finish and complimented that with a clever "D2" hood decal.
-replaced deteriorating plastic trim around the windshield.
-the windows were tinted and WeatherTech window rain deflectors were added,
-the wheel flares were sanded sooth and recoated with trim paint.
Inside, the truck was really very nice but needed:
-new headliner, installed after all the sunroof drains were resealed.
-a rework of the instrument cluster cover to get it solidly mounted.
-genuine leather covers on the e-brake and T-box shifter.
-a WeatherTech rear cargo mat was installed.
-all electrical functions (windows, locks, roofs, radio, AC) were inspected and verified operationally.
But we'd assert the whole is greater than the parts and that gets confirmed when you put eyes on and especially when you get behind the wheel.
